Simple Chain Gauge for Chain Slings
The chain gauge is a practical inspection tool for the regular checking of chain slings in use. It is suitable for measuring elongation and chain wear and is designed for nominal sizes from 6 to 32 mm.
The advantage of the chain gauge lies in its ease of use:
If the chain gauge slides through the chain link, the chain is due for discard.
This allows for a quick determination of whether a chain sling may continue to be used or must be taken out of service.
Regular inspection is especially important for the safe use of chain slings.
Chain slings must not be used if the average link thickness has decreased by more than 10% or if the chain has elongated by more than 3%.
Fractures, cracks, cuts, nicks, corrosion, or deformations are also discard criteria.
It is also important to note: The chain gauge supports ongoing checks but does not replace the mandatory inspections according to DGUV Rule 109-017. Chain slings must be inspected at least once a year by a competent person; in addition, at least every three years, a special inspection for crack detection is required.
