Order wire-ropes from Dolezych

Dolezych steel wire-ropes can be used for a wide range of applications, depending on the type and configuration. The main applications:

  • Lifting ropes for the transportation of loads
  • Standing ropes that are firmly anchored at both rope ends and do not run over pulleys or winches (e.g. guy ropes, holding and suspension ropes)
  • Running ropes that run over pulleys, on winches or traction sheaves (e.g. hoist, pull-in, elevator and conveyor ropes)
  • Forestry ropes, specially compacted ropes, for robust use in forestry, e.g. as winch ropes

The following generally applies to delivery:

  • Steel wire-ropes are supplied in coils - if you require a reel, please specify this
  • When delivering prefabricated steel wire-ropes with a rope end connection on one side, the rope end connection is on the inside

You must have the following information ready when ordering via our sales department:

  • The processing of the ends (smoothly tied with adhesive tape, welded/tipped)
  • The desired greasing (dry, lightly greased, normally greased, heavily greased, oiled)
  • Number of strands x number of wires per strand (e.g. 6x7 - IWRC is a rope consisting of 6 strands of 7 wires including steel rope core)
  • If possible, the intended use, the desired rope type, the rope construction, the rope diameter, the minimum breaking strength (MBK), the surface, the finishing and the length
  • The rope end connection

You can find detailed information about steel wire-ropes that you need to order in our bestseller catalog. If you would like advice on steel wire-ropes, our team will be happy to advise you by phone on 0049 231 82 85 0 or by E-Mail at info@dolezych.de. Do you already know exactly what you need? Which steel wire-rope do you need? Quality for every application

A wire-rope is created when wires are wound helically around a core wire. This creates a spiral rope, for example, which you can use as a guy rope (e.g. on bridges) or an actuating cable (e.g. for industrial machinery). These spiral ropes are not sufficient for use as a machine element with bending stress. For this you need a single or multi-layer round strand rope, preferably parallel lay, which has the advantage that all wires in the strand are oriented parallel to each other and therefore no wire crossovers occur in order to avoid wire breaks inside the strand.

The number, thickness and arrangement of the wires and the choice of strands determine the strand geometry and rope construction, the rope diameter and the rope flexibility. Which rope you need depends on the nature of your requirements:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Resistance to wear and tear

It is important to select the wire-rope according to your intended use - e.g. a steel rope with many thin wires is very flexible, but sensitive to external wear. In contrast, a wire-rope with a few thick wires offers you more resistance to abrasion. However, it is also less flexible and therefore requires pulleys with larger diameters, for example. The wire diameters, their assignment to the rope and the permissible tolerances are mainly defined by DIN EN 12385.

However, the market is demanding more and more special ropes that are computer-designed in accordance with factory standards. The improved cross-sectional geometry and high level of manufacturing expertise of these special ropes compared to DIN ropes increases both the breaking load and the service life.

Dolezych steel wire-ropes: Everything you need to know

A steel wire-rope consists of several components, differs according to the direction of lay and type of lay and has various core inserts and end fittings. Here we explain the basic structure of the ropes and the differences depending on how they are processed.

At a glance: What are Dolezych ropes made of?

Spiral rope:

  • Several wires wound helically around a core wire

Round strand rope:

  • Single or multiple layers
  • Wire composite (spiral rope) forms the strand
  • Strand is wound helically around a core wire
  • The number, thickness and arrangement of the wires and the selection of the strands determine the strand geometry and rope construction, the rope diameter and the rope flexibility

Single wires:

  • Are stranded to form a strand

Strands:

  • Are wrapped around the core

Direction of lay and type of lay

Direction of lay of the round rope:

  • Can be seen from the helix of the outer strands
  • Right-hand ropes “Z”
  • Left-hand ropes “S”

In addition to the direction of lay, a distinction is made according to the type of lay:

  • Cross lay: The wires in the strands have the opposite lay direction to the strands in the rope
  • Lang lay: The wires in the strands are laid in the same direction as the strands in the rope

Heart inserts or “souls”

A distinction is made between

  • Fiber core (FC = Fiber Core)
  • Steel core (IWRC = Independent Wire-rope Core)

Fiber core:

Fiber cores also serve as a grease reservoir for the rope: When the rope is loaded, the diameter tapers, the pressure generated on the core allows the grease to escape and can thus lubricate the rope. The previously common hemp core is hardly used anymore because it is too expensive, too soft, insufficient for external pressure and not resistant enough to moisture. Important: Ropes with a fiber core can be used up to approx. +100°C.

These fiber cores are available from Dolezych:

  • Variant 1 made of hard fibers (manila or sisal) usually as a natural fiber in a dry version (on request with additional treatment of the fiber core with water-repellent and rot-inhibiting oil against rope corrosion from the inside as well as for higher resistance)
  • Variant 2 as synthetic fiber made of polyester or polypropylene is even more weather-resistant

The plastic intermediate layer

Special ropes increasingly contain plastic intermediate layers, which can score points, for example, by doubling the service life and ensuring very smooth running. Further advantages of the plastic intermediate layer are

  • No contact between core and outer strands
  • Reduced cage formation
  • Lubricant replacement
  • Corrosion protection of the steel core
  • Greater rope stability during installation

Compaction of steel wire-ropes

Conventionally manufactured ropes can be compacted in a further work step. In this process, the strands and (possibly also or only) the finished rope are plastically compressed using special tools. This reduces the rope diameter and smoothes the surfaces.

The advantages of strand compaction are

  • The contact lines of the individual wires become “flatter”, i.e. the supports and contact surfaces are enlarged
  • Compacted ropes have a higher breaking strength and fill factor than comparable non-compacted ropes
  • Increased resistance to abrasion, as the outer wires run “flatter”

Rope end connections for steel wire-ropes

When assembling ropes, you can decide which end connection your ropes should have. You can easily have steel wire-ropes with thimbles, turnbuckles or threaded terminals made up at Dolezych in Dortmund.

  • Thread terminal
  • Eye terminal
  • Fork terminal
  • End crimping clamp
  • Full thimble pressed steel
  • Full thimble aluminum pressed
  • Full thimble spliced
  • Clamping screw
  • ring nut
  • turnbuckle
  • Eye bolt
  • Potting: potted fork sleeve, potted bow rope sleeve, potted lug rope bulb, potted rope bulb

What you need to consider: Standards and regulations

  • DIN EN 12385 “Steel wire-ropes”
  • Depending on your intended use (application), different standards or regulations apply within the BG regulations
  • There is no single standard according to which all ropes are standardized
  • The collection of DIN standards is impressive: for slings it is DIN EN 13414, for rope drives, for example, ISO 4309 with VDI 2358 applies
