Anti-slip mats.

Anti-slip mats play a crucial role in helping to secure transported goods. They are used in various means of transportation such as trucks, vans, car trunks and containers. Their main purpose is to increase the coefficient of sliding friction in order to increase the stability of the load. Anti-slip mats are not a stand-alone solution for load-securing, but rather complement the effectiveness of other lashing equipment. By using them, the amount of lashing equipment required can often be reduced or a higher load weight can be secured with the same number of lashing-straps. How anti-slip mats increase load-securing

Anti-slip mats play a key role in securing transported goods by significantly increasing the coefficient of sliding friction (μ) between the load and the loading surface or between individual parts of the load. This contributes significantly to the stability and safety of the transported goods during transportation. The calculation of the coefficient of sliding friction is based on VDI 2700 Sheet 14. The test principles of the German Employer's Liability Insurance Association for Vehicle Maintenance stipulate that the coefficient of sliding friction must not fall below a minimum value of μ = 0.4 in order to ensure sufficient safety. However, the anti-slip mats in our DoMatt series exceed these requirements and achieve coefficients of sliding friction of up to μ = 0.65. This not only ensures compliance with the legal standards, but also provides an additional safety buffer.

The correct use of anti-slip mats: You need to pay attention to this

Anti-slip mats are essential for transport safety, but they should always be combined with other securing measures, e.g. lashing down. They can be used flexibly between loads or between the load and the loading surface and are suitable for almost all types of loads with the exception of bulk goods.

Friction plays an important role in load-securing and has a direct impact on the number and performance of the lashing equipment required. The use of anti-slip mats can offer decisive advantages here. In direct lashing, they make it possible to reduce the required LC (permissible lashing capacity) of the lashing equipment to be used. When lashing down, the increase in the coefficient of sliding friction due to the mats means that less lashing equipment is required and the overall pre-tensioning forces can be reduced.

When making a selection, it is important to ensure that the mats are suitable for the load and the type of lashing. The risk of tipping due to increased friction must also be taken into account and minimized by suitable measures. For optimum effectiveness, the contact surfaces should be swept clean and dry, free from impurities such as ice, oil or grease.

Caution!

  • Be careful with high μ-values! Sometimes higher coefficients of friction are specified for anti-slip mats. These higher coefficients of friction of e.g. μ = 0.9 are ideal values and can be greatly reduced by changing environmental influences. Dimensioning the load-securing equipment on the basis of these excessive values then represents a risk.
  • Anti-slip mats are not edge protectors, as they do not transmit pre-tensioning forces in the lashing strap.

The right dimensions are important for load safety with anti-slip mats

The variety of anti-slip mats is large and offers the right solution for almost every transportation requirement. For the user, the specifications regarding the required dimensions of anti-slip mats for different loads are particularly important. Whether large or small loads, different weight classes or specific load types - there is a wide selection of formats and thicknesses. This ranges from practical individual mats for specific applications to rolls that can be cut to size to provide customized solutions for a wide variety of load geometries.

How to recognize the quality of an anti-slip mat

Indentation behavior & deformation

When subjected to high pressure loads, anti-slip mats with a large proportion of cavities tend to compact and therefore become "soapy". This can cause the coefficient of sliding friction μ to drop sharply. However, pressing the load into the anti-slip mat can also have a positive effect on your load-securing and make it more difficult for your load to slip on the mat.

You must take this into account: The selection of the mat thickness must take into account that no deformations greater than 30% of the initial thickness can occur. The DoMatt anti-slip mats do not show any permanent deformations that impair their function, even when loaded for 24 hours with mesh box pallets weighing 1000 kg.

Tensile/shear strength [N/mm2]

Under load, very thin anti-slip mats < 4 mm with a large proportion of cavities in particular can tear. Inferior granulate mats even tend to "ball up". Therefore, the higher the tensile strength of the anti-slip mat, the better its quality. The DoMatt anti-slip mats from Dolezych have a minimum tensile strength of 0.6 N/mm2 or an elongation at break of 60%.

The marking of DoMatt anti-slip mats

A special feature of DoMatt anti-slip mats is the option of a permanent, captive marking, which can be added at the customer's request. This marking is placed on the edge of the mat. The DoMatt anti-slip mats must be positioned under the load in such a way that the marking remains clearly visible from the outside.
